When I heard that Kat Von D was going to be stocked at Debenhams, I KNEW that the Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette was going to be one of the first things that I had to get my hands on. I’ve seen this contour palette all over instagram and I just HAD to know whether or not the hype was worth it.

and to be honest I still don’t know.

As I’ve only really seen the Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette in pictures – usually heavily edited ones – I was under the impression that the darker shades in the Shade + Light Palette would be suitable for my skin tone  . . . and its not.

The Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette – £36.00 via Debenhams – has been designed to be a “game changer” for makeup lovers as it was created by Kat Von De to be an “artist contour palette”  with shades that could look great on everyone. The 6 matte, contour and highlight powders in this palette have been arranged by undertone, so you get two neutral shades – and – , two warm shades – and – with two cool shades – and – . The idea is the you use the deeper shades to add natural shadow and depth to your face (aka contour your face) , then accentuate your best angles with the brighter highlight shades.

Now If there’s any justice out there, someone would be playing the world’s saddest song on the world’s smallest violin for me because I am devastated! I know that the Kat had the best intentions when creating this palette but this palette is not as universal as Instagram or its product shots would make you believe.

I already knew that the light and medium shades in this palette wouldn’t suit me, but I had such high hopes for the darker shades. If you take a look at my swatch below, you can see that that subconscious – the darkest shade in this palette – isn’t that much darker  than my skin tone, making this post less of a review and more of a “show and tell”.

As gorgeous as this palette is, it is just not the one for me. I’m hoping that Kat Von D decides to bring out a darker version of the Shade + Light Palette but I’m not really holding my breath for that. If you happen to be lighter than me and after a contour palette that you can use in the summer (when you’re a bit darker) and in the winter when you’re paler then I would definitely suggest that you pick up this palette but personally this palette is a bit of a miss (for obvious reasons)

The Kat Von D Shade + Light Contour Palette costs £36 and is available to purchase from Debenhams.
