I’ve been a fan of Mizani products since I was introduced to their butter blend range in 2014 – yes I’m an OG Mizani Supporter – I love the quality of their products, so I had high expectations for this Mizani Scalp Care Calming Scalp Lotion, and it didn’t fail me.
Tension is part of the package with braided styles and unfortunately most times, our scalp suffers as a result of the slay. Apart from the initial tension sometimes it’s just hard and time-consuming to moisture your scalp as frequently as we would want to because it would lead to mass product build up after a week or two.
Thankfully, products like the Mizani Scalp Care Lotion makes it easier to put the moisture & the nourishment that we can lose with a braided hairstyle back in – without weighing your hair down.
Suitable for hair in braids or styles where it’s harder to care for your scalp, the Mizani Scalp Lotion comes with a screw-cap nozzle that makes it easy for you apply this product to your scalp precisely. The “squeezy” bottle allows you to control how much product actually comes out which is GREAT for those moments where you might just have a little itch, or area of dryness.
The consistency is perfect for me as it isn’t too thick neither is it too runny.
Despite containing a mix of Menthol, Eucalyptus oil, Aloe and Avocado oil, this is a water-based formulation with Water being the first ingredient listed (which is always a good sign). This Mizani Scalp Lotion from Mizani does come out as a white liquid, but this “dissolves” and doesn’t stay visible in your hair. It’s not sticky and actually ends up feeling like water on your scalp and is so refreshing.

I was able to apply the Mizani Scalp Care Calming Scalp Lotion to my whole head before I massaged it in and didn’t have to rush to stop it dripping down my forehead. The instructions don’t require you to massage it, but I love a good massage and thought I would take the opportunity. It’s pretty easy for anyone to use and apart from feeling where you’ve used it, you can also see it.
Personally I love a good, immediate hair-tingle but I found myself waiting for it to really kick in and build up, but as it’s a soothing lotion, I understand why I don’t get that with the Mizani Scalp Care Lotion.
Most products cause build up and leave your scalp feeling clogged or heavy, but I don’t feel like this does that. I really love the water type feel, even though it’s so much thicker. There is the temptation to go overboard because of this, but I’d recommend you use what you need, when you need it.
I washed my hair before I installed my faux locs, and I usually spray with a leave in conditioner or attempt to wash my hair, but I feel like this actually revitalised my scalp. I don’t feel like I need to follow up with a cream or an oil, as my scalp doesn’t feel dry, but if you do decide to, I’d say wait a few hours for it to do what it needs to.
If you find that your scalp needs soothing, braided or not, I think you’d like this, but don’t take my word, try it for yourself and let us know.
