3 ‘Dark Skin Friendly’ Luxury Brands (That Aren’t MAC)

I love high end makeup. It’s my not-so-secret vice and what I seem to spend quite a bit of money on. I have to admit that I haven’t really bought that much in the last few months as not that many brands have brought out that products/ranges that are ‘black girl friendly’. I don’t really want to be controversial or starting ranting about brands that don’t stock foundations, powders, blushes etc for darker skin tones as I’m in much too good a mood to rant – plus it is a Tuesday – so instead of moaning about brands that don’t stock ‘dark skin friendly cosmetics’, let me focus on the few who do. . . . . that aren’t MAC as I really feel that some people really need to expand their makeup horizons.

My first Brand would have to be Bare Minerals (or Bare Escentuals depending on where you live?). I really don’t think that Bare Minerals gets the credit they deserve as they honestly do some fantastic things. I love their entire Marvellous Moxie range and their LashDomination mascara was my go to mascara for 2013 – and most of 2014 – so I implore you to give this brand a try as they are brining out a 20 shade foundation range in September – which I will review later this week – and also a shade of bb enhanced eyeshadows which make for amazing eyeshadow primers.

Must Have Products: Bare Minerals Bare Skin Brightening Foundation in Bare Mocha, Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lipstick in Risk It All, Bare Minerals The French Kiss Ready Blush, & Bare Minerals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Party Starter

I think NARS are ‘MAC’s older sister’ as they are just as vibrant and colourful as MAC but are just a tad bit more sophisticated. I think NARS have some of the best makeup bases in the market and their Lip pencils are just divine. I have a few things that I want to try out from this brand; like their creamy concealer. The not thing I’ve personally learnt – the hard and expensive way – is to give any NARS cream products a miss, while their powder, foundation and lips range is fairly strong, all their cream products leave something to be desired.

Must Have Products: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Benares, NARS Surabaya Eyeshadow Duo, NARS Laguna Illuminator,  NARS Heatwave Lipstick, NARS Orgasm Lipgloss

Estee Lauder is so classic!! I just feel so grown and sophisticated when I pull out my EL compact from my bag to touch up my makeup – even though I just ran for the train yet again – I find that the Estee Lauder has AMAZING cheek products and brushes. While the majority of their limited edition collections aren’t always ‘dark skin friendly’ – drat – you will always find some gems in their bronze themed limited edition collections.

Must Have Products: Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in Sandalwood , Estee Lauder Contour Shadow Brush 30, Estee Lauder Camo Chrome Pure Colour Eyeshadow Palette, Estee Lauder Foundation Brush 1, Estee Lauder Invisible Powder Makeup 6WN1

These are my personal favourite products from these brands and I obviously know that there are a few more brands out there that do absolutely amazing things and stock equally amazing products but these are the brands that are on my radar and hopefully they are now on yours too. Have you tried any products from these brands before? Do you have any recommendations for me?

  1. Hiya, I love this idea! I’ve recently just started getting into make-up and would like to see maybe 3 “black-girl friendly” highstreet brands. Thanks xx

    • That will be a little difficult as I don’t think there are 3 ‘black-girl friendly’ hughstreet brands BUT I will do some research and get this post done
